The Trinity of Gir


The local people called the Maldharis, their Ness (local word for their huts) and the lions form an inextricable part of the Gir landscape. The Maldharis - mainly livestock owners, have resisted efforts to be rehabilitated outside the protected area despite the fact that their animals are frequently attacked by the lions and other predators. However, they are given nominal monetary compensation when any of their livestock is killed by the predators.

They live in small clusters of 6-8 families in a "Ness" within the park with fencing around their quarters which serve as the only protection against the predators. Interestingly, their houses have no doors and are open (talk of an Open Door Policy!). Photos below are of their Ness
